Starting in 2015, the Elkhart County Highway Department saw opportunities to improve traffic flow and to protect motorists by making modification and to this stretch of road. One of the concerns was the use of non-motorized vehicles on this stretch of road and the potential hazards as a result of slower moving vehicles. In 2018, alignment and the beginning of the process had begun.
In order to complete this project in the most efficient way possible, the project has been broken up into stages. The first stage will take place from County Road 31 to County Road 35. Here the road will undergo construction and additional buggy lanes will be added along the shoulders to improve overall safety and traffic flow. The second phase will occur from CR 35 to SR 13. This project is currently in progress for 2020.
Additional details about this project can be found on the Elkhart County Highway Department's Website here.
